Boundaries as a Healing Practice
For a long time, I thought boundaries were walls. Cold. Rigid. Selfish.
I don’t see them that way anymore. Boundaries are not about keeping people out. They are about keeping me in. Keeping me whole.
I didn’t really understand that until my body made it impossible to ignore.
Even when my head said I was fine, my body told a different story. The swelling. The flares. The exhaustion that would not lift. All of it was my body saying, you’re not listening. That I was saying yes when I meant no. That I was pushing past what I needed, just to “keep up”.
My body was keeping score.
For years, I brushed it off. I told myself that powering through was strength. But it wasn’t. It was survival mode. And survival mode doesn’t let you heal. It doesn’t let you breathe.
Now I understand that boundaries are part of healing. They are not only about rest or energy. They show up in how I allow people to speak to me, how I let them treat me, and who I choose to keep close. Protecting my health means protecting myself in every way.
The right people are never pushed away by that. Boundaries don’t scare them off. They draw them closer. Because when I protect my energy, I can show up as myself. Not the resentful version. Not the exhausted version. The real one.
That is what I want. Relationships and community built around the truth of who I am and who I am becoming.
Boundaries are not walls. They are healing. And my body thanks me every single time I remember that.

Indie
PS: If you have ever felt your body keeping score when you stretched yourself too thin, I’d love to know how you noticed it.

I so related to this! I was just having a conversation about how once I established boundaries around something specific, it helped me see certain things more clearly. I still struggle with choosing and maintaining boundaries, but its such a good practice and something to work on everyday.
Saying no to others actually allows you to say yes to more of what matters to you.
