On the Importance of Sleep
(A life edit for this season.)
Good Morning Sunshines.
This time of year always slows me down. The days end earlier, the air turns colder, and the rhythm of nature shifts to something quieter. Everything around me seems to whisper the same message. Go inside. Rest more. Listen to what your body is asking for.
Sleep used to be something I pushed to the bottom of my list. There was always one more email, one more thing to finish, one more reason to stay up later than I should. But the older I get, the more I understand how much sleep shapes everything else. My energy. My clarity. My mood. Even my hopefulness. It all begins with rest.
And nature agrees. Nothing in the natural world runs at full speed this time of year. The garden pulls inward. Trees conserve energy. Animals sleep longer. Light shifts. Darkness asks us to soften. We are the only species that tries to outsmart the season.
Lately I have been making small edits to honor sleep in a way I never used to. Simple things that help signal to my body that it is safe to settle. None of it is fancy, and none of it requires perfection. It is just rhythm.
My current sleep edits:
I dim the lights earlier, especially when the sun sets before dinner.
I try to finish dinner earlier to support digestion and avoid going to bed feeling heavy.
I plug my phone in across the room so I am not tempted to scroll at night.
I keep a warm drink nearby, usually something herbal and simple, to mark the end of the day.
I get ready for bed earlier so I am not rushing through the last hour of the night.
I turn down the noise in my bedroom. No TV, no background chaos, just quiet.
I started using a weighted blanket, and it has made a difference. The gentle, even pressure settles my nervous system and helps calm that restless feeling that tends to show up at night. It feels grounding, especially in the colder months, and I fall asleep faster with it.
I give myself grace. The goal is not perfection. It is rhythm.
Good sleep is less about routines and more about listening to the cues your body is giving you. When I follow the season’s lead, everything feels easier. I fall asleep faster. I wake up steadier. I am simply more myself.
If you are feeling tired in a way that sleep does not seem to fix, maybe this is your reminder to follow nature’s lead. Slow earlier. Soften sooner. Trade harsh light for gentle warmth. Give your body signals that the day is done.
Winter is a season of repair. Sleep is where the repairing begins.
Wishing you long nights, soft mornings, and a little more grace with yourself.
Indie

I love this post Indie. I too used to push sleep to the bottom of the list and this year I started doing many of the same tips you outlined and they have been soooo helpful for my overall health. I also love that you said: "The goal is not perfection. It is rhythm.". Thank you for sharing and all these great reminders! xo
